Chapter 35: Furious Sumantra Criticizes Kaikeyī
Text 2.35.21
तत्र ते जननी क्रुद्धा मृत्युपाशमभीप्सती।
हासं ते नृपते सौम्य जिज्ञासामीति चाब्रवीत्॥
tatra te jananī kruddhā mṛtyu-pāśam abhīpsatī
hāsaṁ te nṛpate saumya jijñāsāmīti cābravīt
tatra = at his laughter; te = your; jananī = mother; kruddhā = became angry; mṛtyu-pāśam = a noose of death [to be fastened around her husband’s neck]; abhīpsatī = desiring; hāsam te = why you laughed; nṛpate = king; saumya = gentle; jijñāsāmi iti ca = I want to know; abravīt = she asked him.
Your mother became angry at his laughter. Desiring a noose of death [to be fastened around her husband’s neck], she asked him, “Gentle king, I want to know why you laughed.”
She became angry at the king’s laughter as she thought he laughed at her.
