Chapter 35: Furious Sumantra Criticizes Kaikeyī
Text 2.35.30
मा त्वं प्रोत्साहिता पापैर्देवराजसमप्रभम्।
भर्तारं लोकभर्तारमसद्धर्ममुपादधाः॥
mā tvaṁ protsāhitā pāpair deva-rāja-sama-prabham
bhartāraṁ loka-bhartāram asad-dharmam upadadhāḥ
mā = don’t; tvam protsāhitā = incited; pāpaiḥ = by sins; deva-rāja-sama-prabham = who resembles the king of the devas; bhartāram = your husband; loka-bhartāram = and who maintains the people; asat-dharmam = in activities other than bona fide dhārmika activities; upadadhāḥ = make engage.
Incited by sins, don’t make your husband, who resembles the king of the devas and who maintains the people, engage in activities other than bona fide dhārmika activities.
Asad-dharmam (“Activities other than bona fide dhārmika activities”) refers to coronating a younger son [of the king] and then banishing [his] eldest son.
