न हि कञ्चन पश्यामो राघवस्यागुणं वयम्।
दुर्लभो ह्यस्य निरयः शशाङ्कस्येव कल्मषम्॥
na hi kañcana paśyāmo rāghavasyāguṇaṁ vayam
durlabho hy asya nirayaḥ śaśāṅkasyeva kalmaṣam
na hi = don’t; kañcana = any; paśyāmaḥ = find; rāghavasya = in Rāghava; aguṇam = defect; vayam = we; durlabhaḥ = cannot be found; hi = indeed; asya = in Him; nirayaḥ = a defect that leads to hell; śaśāṅkasya = [cannot be found in the young] moon; iva = just as; kalmaṣam = a spot.
We don’t find any defect in Rāghava. Indeed, a defect that leads to hell cannot be found in Him, just as a spot [cannot be found in the young] moon.1
1 Technical note: śaśāṅkasya dvitīyā-candrasya kalmaṣam iva asya nirayaḥ kalmaṣaṁ durlabhaḥ naivāstīty arthaḥ.
1 Kaikeyī had given the example of Asamañja while here the counter-example of the [young] moon is given in response. Young moon refers to the moon on the second day after Amāvāsyā or the dark moon night. No spots are even visible in the moon then.
