Chapter 37: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Wear Clothes of Bark
Text 2.37.16

ऊचुश्च परमायस्ता रामं ज्वलिततेजसम्।
वत्स नैवं नियुक्तेयं वनवासे मनस्विनी॥

ūcuś ca paramāyastā rāmaṁ jvalita-tejasam
vatsa naivaṁ niyukteyaṁ vana-vāse manasvinī

ūcuḥ ca = they told; parama-āyastāḥ = greatly distressed; rāmam = Rāma; jvalita-tejasam = who blazed in His prowess; vatsa = dear child; na = not; evam = in this manner; niyuktā = has been ordered; iyam = this; vana-vāse = to reside in the forest; manasvinī = virtuous lady.

Greatly distressed, they told Rāma who blazed in His prowess: Dear child, this virtuous lady has not been ordered to reside in the forest in this manner.1

They intended to tell Rāma, “Virtuous Sītā has not been ordered by Your father, the way You have been ordered, to reside in the forest.”

GLOSS. Sītā was not ordered by Kaikeyī.1
