न त्वेवानागते काले देहाच्च्यवति जीवितम्।
कैकेय्या क्लिश्यमानस्य मृत्युर्मम न विद्यते॥
योऽहं पावकसङ्काशं पश्यामि पुरतः स्थितम्।
विहाय वसने सूक्ष्मे तापसाच्छादमात्मजम्॥
na tv evānāgate kale dehāc cyavati jīvitam
kaikeyyā kliśyamānasya mṛtyur mama na vidyate
yo ’haṁ pāvaka-saṅkāśaṁ paśyāmi purataḥ sthitaṁ
vihāya vasane sūkṣme tāpasācchādam ātmajam
na tu eva = not; anāgate = not destined for it; kale = at a time; dehāt = the body; cyavati = does leave; jīvitam = life; kaikeyyā = by Kaikeyī; kliśyamānasya = [despite] being tormented; mṛtyuḥ mama na vidyate = I don’t die; yaḥ aham = I; pāvaka-saṅkāśam = He is resplendent like fire; paśyāmi = see; purataḥ = before me; sthitam = standing; vihāya = after giving up; vasane = clothes; sūkṣme = His fine [royal]; tāpasa-ācchādam = He is covered over by the garment of an ascetic; ātmajam = my son.
Life does not leave the body at a time not destined for it. I don’t die [despite] being tormented by Kaikeyī. I see my son standing before me. He is resplendent like fire. After giving up His fine [royal] clothes, He is covered over by the garment of an ascetic.
“Life does not leave the body at a time not destined for it” means “Life does not leave the body when the karmic reactions that brought about the development of the body are not destroyed.”
