मन्ये खलु मया पूर्वं विवत्सा बहवः कृताः।
प्राणिनो हिंसिता वापि तस्मादिदमुपस्थितम्॥
manye khalu mayā pūrvaṁ vivatsā bahavaḥ kṛtāḥ
prāṇino hiṁsitā vāpi tasmād idam upasthitam
manye = I think that; khalu = certainly; mayā = I; pūrvam = in the past; vivatsāḥ = separated cows from their calves; bahavaḥ = many; kṛtāḥ = have; prāṇinaḥ = living creatures; hiṁsitāḥ = tormented; vā api = or; tasmāt = therefore; idam = this; upasthitam = has happened [to me].
I think that I have certainly separated many cows from their calves in the past or tormented living creatures. Therefore, this has happened [to me].1
1 Conditioned souls can learn from this that if we cause others to suffer, in a future lifetime we will have to suffer in the same manner by the inexorable law of karma. What goes around comes around.
