Chapter 39: Kausalyā Instructs Sītā
Text 2.39.8
एवमुक्त्वा तु वचनं बाष्पेण पिहितेक्षणः।
रामेति सकृदेवोक्त्वा व्याहर्तुं न शशाक ह॥
evam uktvā tu vacanaṁ bāṣpeṇa pihitekṣaṇaḥ
rāmeti sakṛd evoktvā vyāhartuṁ na śaśāka ha
evam = these; uktvā tu = having spoken; vacanam = words; bāṣpeṇa = with tears; pihita-īkṣaṇaḥ = his eyes became covered; rāma iti = Rāma; sakṛt eva = once; uktvā = he uttered and then; vyāhartum na = anything; śaśāka ha = became incapable.
Having spoken these words, his eyes became covered with tears. He uttered “Rāma!” once and then became incapable of speaking anything.
