Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 39: Kausalyā Instructs Sītā
Text 2.39.31

साहमेवंगता श्रेष्ठा श्रुतर्धर्मपरावरा।
आर्ये किमवमन्येऽहं स्त्रीणां भर्ता हि दैवतम्॥

sāham evaṁ-gatā śreṣṭhā-śruta-dharma-parāvarā
ārye kim avamanye ’haṁ strīṇāṁ bhartā hi daivatam

aham = I; evam-gatā = follow such principles of chastity and service to the husband; śreṣṭhā-śruta-dharma-parāvarā = I have learnt about such dharma generally and in detail from exemplary chaste ladies like my mother; ārye = noble lady; kim avamanye = do I dishonor my husband; aham = I; strīṇām = for women; bhartā hi = their husband; daivatam = is their deity.

I follow such principles of chastity and service to the husband. I have learnt about such dharma generally and in detail from exemplary chaste ladies like my mother. Noble lady, do I dishonor my husband? For women, their husband is their deity.

GLOSS. In some manuscripts śreṣṭhe śruta-dharma-parāvarā appears instead of śreṣṭhā-śruta-dharma-parāvarā in which case the verse will mean: “I follow such principles of chastity and service to the husband. I have learnt about such dharma generally and in detail. Noble and excellent lady, do I dishonor my husband? For women, their husband is their deity.”
