Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.6
व्यसनी वा समृद्धो वा गतिरेष तवानघ।
एष लोके सतां धर्मो यज्येष्ठवशगो भवेत्॥
vyasanī vā samṛddho vā gatir eṣa tavānagha
eṣa loke satāṁ dharmo yaj jyeṣṭha-vaśago bhavet
vyasanī = He is in crisis; vā = whether; samṛddhaḥ = prosperity; vā = or; gatiḥ = shelter; eṣaḥ = Rāma; tava = is Your; anagha = sinless Lakṣmaṇa; eṣaḥ = it; loke = in the world; satām = of saintly persons; dharmaḥ = is the dharma; yat = because; jyeṣṭha-vaśagaḥ = subordinate to elders; bhavet = to be.
Sinless Lakṣmaṇa, Rāma is Your shelter whether He is in crisis or prosperity because it is the dharma of saintly persons in the world to be subordinate to elders.
Now she tells Lakṣmaṇa why He should go [to the forest] when Rāma goes. The second half of the verse points out that the Dharma-śāstras provide taking shelter in this manner.
