Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.7

इदं हि वृत्तमुचितं कुलस्यास्य सनातनम्।
दानं दीक्षा च यज्ञेषु तनुत्यागो मृधेषु च॥

idaṁ hi vṛttam ucitaṁ kulasyāsya sanātanam
dānaṁ dīkṣā ca yajñeṣu tanu-tyāgo mṛdheṣu ca

idam hi = these; vṛttam = activities; ucitam = are appropriate; kulasya = dynasty; asya = for this; sanātanam = eternal; dānam =  charity; dīkṣā ca = initiation; yajñeṣu = into sacrifices; tanu-tyāgaḥ = giving up one’s body; mṛdheṣu = in battle; ca = and.

These eternal activities are appropriate for this dynasty: charity, initiation into sacrifices and giving up one’s body in battle.

She then points out that [these] dharmic duties appropriate to their dynasty are more important than [even] following one’s elders. She implies here that Rāma should be protected even by giving up one’s body during battle.
