Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.11

ततः सुमन्त्रः काकुत्स्थं प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत्।
विनीतो विनयज्ञश्च मातलिर्वासवं यथा॥

tataḥ sumantraḥ kākutsthaṁ prāñjalir vākyam abravīt
vinīto vinayajñaś ca mātalir vāsavaṁ yathā

tataḥ = then; sumantraḥ = Sumantra; kākutstham = to the descendant of Kakutstha; prāñjaliḥ = he joined his palms in supplication and; vākyam = the following words; abravīt = spoke; vinītaḥ = was humble; vinayajñaḥ = knew the art of self-discipline; ca = and; mātaliḥ = Mātali; vāsavam = [speaks to] Indra; yathā = just as.

Sumantra was humble and knew the art of self-discipline. He then joined his palms in supplication and spoke the following words to the descendant of Kakutstha just as Mātali [speaks to] Indra.
