Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.19

प्रति याते महारण्यं चिररात्राय राघवे।
बभूव नगरे मूर्च्छा बलमूर्च्छा जनस्य च॥

prati yāte mahāraṇyaṁ cira-rātrāya rāghave
babhūva nagare mūrcchā bala-mūrcchā janasya ca

prati = for; yāte = departed; mahā-araṇyam = the great forest; cira-rātrāya = for a long time; rāghave = when Rāghava; babhūva nagare mūrcchā = the women and children in the city fainted; bala-mūrcchā = the horses, elephants and others in the army became bewildered; janasya = the people who had come to attend the coronation [also fainted]; ca = and.

When Rāghava departed for the great forest, the women and children in the city fainted for a long time, the horses, elephants and others in the army became bewildered, and the people who had come to attend the coronation [also fainted].

The women and children in the city fainted, that is, they lost their consciousness due to excessive anguish.
