Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.34
निर्गच्छति महाबाहौ रामे पौरजनाश्रुभिः।
पतितैरभ्यवहितं प्रशशाम महीरजः॥
nirgacchati mahā-bāhau rāme paura-janāśrubhiḥ
patitair abhyavahitaṁ praśaśāma mahī-rajaḥ
nirgacchati = departed; mahā-bāhau = when the mighty-armed; rāme = Rāma; paura-jana-aśrubhiḥ = by the tears of the residents of Ayodhyā; patitaiḥ = that had fallen on it; abhyavahitam = [when it was] moistened; praśaśāma = settled; mahī-rajaḥ = the dust of the earth.
The dust of the earth settled [when it was] moistened by the tears of the residents of Ayodhyā that had fallen on it when the mighty-armed Rāma departed.
