Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.39

हा रामेति जनाः केचिद्राममातेति चापरे।
अन्तःपुरं समृद्धं च क्रोशन्तः पर्यदेवयन्॥

hā rāmeti janāḥ kecid rāma-māteti cāpare
antaḥ-puraṁ samṛddhaṁ ca krośantaḥ paryadevayan

= Oh; rāma iti = Rāma; janāḥ = men [cried]; kecit = some; rāma-mātā iti = “Oh, Rāma’s mother”; ca apare = while others [cried]; antaḥ-puram = members of the inner quarters; samṛddham = opulent; ca = and; krośantaḥ = cried; paryadevayan = lamented in distress.

Some men cried, “Oh, Rāma!” while others cried, “Oh, Rāma’s mother!”1 Members of the opulent inner quarters cried and lamented in distress.
