Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.42
पदातिनौ च यानार्हावदुःखार्हौ सुखोचितौ।
दृष्ट्वा सञ्चोदयामास शीघ्रं याहीति सारथिम्॥
padātinau ca yānārhāv aduḥkhārhau sukhocitau
dṛṣṭvā sañcodayām āsa śīghraṁ yāhīti sārathim
padātinau ca = [but they] walked on foot; yāna-arhau = they deserved [to use] vehicles [for transport]; aduḥkha-arhau = they did not deserve [such] distress; sukha-ucitau = [for] they were used to comfort; dṛṣṭvā = noticing them; sañcodayām āsa = Rāma ordered; śīghram = quickly; yāhi iti = go; sārathim = the charioteer.
They deserved [to use] vehicles [for transport but] they walked on foot. They did not deserve [such] distress [for] they were used to comfort. Noticing them, Rāma ordered the charioteer, “Go quickly!”
