Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.43
न हि तत्पुरुषव्याघ्रो दुःखजं दर्शनं पितुः।
मातुश्च सहितुं शक्तस्तोत्रार्दित इव द्विपः॥
na hi tat puruṣa-vyāghro duḥkhajaṁ darśanaṁ pituḥ
mātuś ca sahituṁ śaktas totrārdita iva dvipaḥ
na hi = not; tat = the; puruṣa-vyāghraḥ = Prince Rāma; duḥkhajam = distressing; darśanam = sight; pituḥ = of His father; mātuḥ = mother; ca = and; sahitum = tolerate; śaktaḥ = could; totra-arditaḥ = tormented by its goad 3; iva = like; dvipaḥ = an elephant.
Like an elephant tormented by its goad, Prince Rāma could not tolerate the distressing sight of His father and mother.
