Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.47
तिष्ठेति राजा चुक्रोश याहि याहीति राघवः।
सुमत्रस्य बभूवात्मा चक्रयोरिव चान्तरा॥
tiṣṭheti rājā cukrośa yāhi yāhīti rāghavaḥ
sumantrasya babhūvātmā cakrayor iva cāntarā
tiṣṭha iti = “stop”; rājā = the king; cukrośa = cried out; yāhi = “go”; yāhi iti = “go”; rāghavaḥ = Rāghava [ordered]; sumantrasya = Sumantra’s; babhūva = became; ātmā = mind; cakrayoḥ = the front and rear wheel of a chariot; iva ca = like; antarā = a person caught up between.
The king cried out, “Stop!” Rāghava [ordered], “Go, go!” Sumantra’s mind became like a person caught between the front and rear wheels of a chariot.
Sumantra fell into a crisis [of duty] due to the [conflicting] instructions of Daśaratha and Rāma.
