Chapter 41: Ayodhyā Suffers After Rāma’s Departure
Text 2.41.12
नक्षत्राणि गताचींषि ग्रहाश्च गततेजसः।
विशाखास्तु सधुमाश्च नभसि प्रचकाशिरे॥
नक्षत्राणि गताचींषि ग्रहाश्च गततेजसः।
विशाखास्तु सधुमाश्च नभसि प्रचकाशिरे॥
nakṣatrāṇi = the nakṣatras; gata-arcīṁṣi = were without radiance; grahāḥ ca = the heavenly bodies; gata-tejasaḥ = were devoid of their prowess; viśākhāḥ tu = the nakṣatra Viśākhā; sadhūmāḥ ca = like smoke; nabhasi = on the sky; pracakāśire = appeared.
The nakṣatras were without radiance. The heavenly bodies which were devoid of their prowess. The nakṣatra Viśākhā appeared on the sky like smoke.
Viśākhā is the nakṣatra of the land of the Ikṣvākus. That it appeared like smoke indicates that the king will experience a calamity.
