Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 41: Ayodhyā Suffers After Rāma’s Departure
Text 2.41.15
अकस्मान्नागरः सर्वो जनो दैन्यमुपागमत्।
आहारे वा विहारे वा न कश्चिदकरोन्मनः॥
akasmān nāgaraḥ sarvo jano dainyam upāgamat
āhāre vā vihāre vā na kaścid akaron manaḥ
akasmāt = all of a sudden; nāgaraḥ = living in the city; sarvaḥ janaḥ = everyone; dainyam upāgamat = became dejected; āhāre vā = eating; vihāre = recreation; vā = or; na kaścit akarot manaḥ = no one had the mind to engage in.
All of a sudden everyone living in the city became dejected. No one had the mind to engage in eating or recreation.
Akasmāt indicates that [the above took place] only due to Rāma’s exile; it did not happen because of their separation from an [intimate] friend.
