Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 41: Ayodhyā Suffers After Rāma’s Departure
Text 2.41.16

शोकपर्यायसन्तप्तः सततं दीर्घमुच्छ्वसन्।
अयोध्यायां जनः सर्वः शुशोच जगतीपतिम्॥

śoka-paryāya-santaptaḥ satataṁ dīrgham ucchvasan
ayodhyāyāṁ janaḥ sarvaḥ śuśoca jagatī-patim

śoka-paryāya-santaptaḥ = anguished due to a series of distressing events; satatam = all the time; dīrgham ucchvasan = sighing; ayodhyāyām = in Ayodhyā; janaḥ sarvaḥ = everyone; śuśoca = lamented; jagatī-patim = for the king.

Anguished due to a series of distressing events, sighing all the time, everyone in Ayodhyā lamented for the king.

GLOSS. In some manuscripts, cukopa appears instead of śuśoca indicating that everyone in Ayodhyā became angry at the king, [though] not as the immediate object of their anger.1

1 They were angry at Kaikeyī for having manipulated the king into something he didn’t want.
