Chapter 41: Ayodhyā Suffers After Rāma’s Departure
Text 2.41.17
बाष्पपर्याकुलमुखो राजमार्गगतो जनः।
न हृष्टो लक्ष्यते कश्चित्सर्वः शोकपरायणः॥
bāṣpa-paryākula-mukho rāja-mārga-gato janaḥ
na hṛṣṭo lakṣyate kaścit sarvaḥ śoka-parāyaṇaḥ
bāṣpa-paryākula-mukhaḥ = the faces were filled with tears; rāja-mārga-gataḥ = on the grand road; janaḥ = of the people; na = not; hṛṣṭaḥ = happy man; lakṣyate = was seen [there]; kaścit = a single; sarvaḥ = everyone; śoka-parāyaṇaḥ = was absorbed in sorrow.
The faces of the people on the grand road were filled with tears. Not a single happy man was seen [there]. Everyone was absorbed in sorrow.
