Chapter 42: Daśaratha Goes to Kausalyā’s Residence in Distress
Text 2.42.13
विललाप च दुःखार्तः प्रियं पुत्रमनुस्मरन्।
नगरान्तमनुप्राप्तं बुद्ध्वा पुत्रमथाब्रवीत्॥
vilalāpa ca duḥkhārtaḥ priyaṁ putram anusmaran
nagarāntam anu prāptaṁ buddhvā putram athābravīt
vilalāpa = lamented; ca = and; duḥkha-ārtaḥ = he became anguished in distress; priyam = his beloved; putram = son; anusmaran = while continuously remembering; nagara-antam anu prāptam = had left the city; buddhvā = having understood; putram = that his son; atha abravīt = he spoke [as follows].
Having understood that his son had left the city, he became anguished in distress and lamented while continuously remembering his beloved son. He spoke [as follows].
vāhanānāṁ ca mukhyānāṁ vahatāṁ taṁ mamātmajam
padāni pathi dṛśyante sa mahātmā na dṛśyate
GLOSS. It is implied here that because he was exclusively absorbed in anxiety about his son, he became bewildered [and so spoke as follows].
