Chapter 44: Sumitrā Consoles Kausalyā
Text 2.44.7
कीर्तिभूतां पताकां यो लोके भ्रमयति प्रभुः।
धर्मसत्यव्रतधनः किं न प्राप्तस्तवात्मजः॥
kīrti-bhūtāṁ patākāṁ yo loke bhramayati prabhuḥ
dharma-satya-vrata-dhanaḥ kiṁ na prāptas tavātmajaḥ
kīrti-bhūtām = of fame; patākām = the flag; yaḥ = He; loke = in the world; bhramayati = causing to fly; prabhuḥ = is the Lord; dharma-satya-vrata-dhanaḥ = He has the wealth of dharma, truthfulness and performance of scriptural vows; kim = what benefits; na = not; prāptaḥ = has attained; tava = your; ātmajaḥ = son.
He is the Lord causing the flag of fame to fly in the world. He has the wealth of dharma, truthfulness and performance of scriptural vows. What benefits has your son not attained?
Rāma causes the flag of fame to fly in the world, that is, He is well-known and famous among all creatures. “What benefits has your son not attained?” means “He is fit to receive benefits from everyone.” Therefore, Sumitrā-devī implies, Queen Kausalyā should not lament about Rāma.
