Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 44: Sumitrā Consoles Kausalyā
Text 2.44.20
धनुर्ग्रहवरो यस्य बाणखड्गास्त्रभृत्स्वयम्।
लक्ष्मणो व्रजति ह्यग्रे तस्य किं नाम दुर्लभम्॥
dhanurgraha-varo yasya bāṇa-khaḍgāstrabhṛt svayam
lakṣmaṇo vrajati hy agre tasya kiṁ nāma durlabham
dhanurgraha-varaḥ = the best of bowmen; yasya = of whom; bāṇa-khaḍga-astrabhṛt = holding arrows, swords and weapons; svayam = personally; lakṣmaṇaḥ = Lakṣmaṇa; vrajati hi = walks; agre = in front; tasya = for Him; kim nāma = what; durlabham = is impossible.
What is impossible for Him in front of whom Lakṣmaṇa, the best of bowmen holding arrows, swords and weapons personally walks?
GLOSS. It is hinted here that it is appropriate for Lakṣmaṇa to walk ahead of Rāma, the best of kings, because Lakṣmaṇa is His bed [Ananta Śeṣa].
