Chapter 45: The Brāhmaṇas from Ayodhyā Follow Rāma
Text 2.45.19
द्विजातींस्तु पदातींस्तान्रामश्चारित्रवत्सलः।
न शशाक घृणाचक्षुः परिमोक्तुं रथेन सः॥
dvi-jātīṁs tu padātīṁs tān rāmaś cāritra-vatsalaḥ
na śaśāka ghṛṇā-cakṣuḥ parimoktuṁ rathena saḥ
dvi-jātīn tu = twice-born; padātīn = [to walk] on foot; tān = the; rāmaḥ = Rāma; cāritra-vatsalaḥ = was fond of good conduct; na = not; śaśāka = could; ghṛṇā-cakṣuḥ = His eyes were moist with compassion; parimoktum rathena = go on the chariot leaving; saḥ = and He.
His eyes were moist with compassion and He was fond of good conduct. Rāma could not go on the chariot leaving the twice-born [to walk] on foot.
Rāmacandra could not leave the twice-born the way He left Daśaratha and his guards while joining His palms in supplication.
