Chapter 48: The Ladies in Ayodhyā Lament
Text 2.48.34
नष्टज्वलनसम्पाता प्रशान्ताध्यायसत्कथा।
तिमिरेणाभिलिप्तेव सा तदा नगरी बभौ॥
naṣṭa-jvalana-sampātā praśāntādhyāya-sat-kathā
timireṇābhilipteva sā tadā nagarī babhau
naṣṭa-jvalana-sampātā = the sacrificial fire was not lit in the city; praśānta-adhyāya-sat-kathā = studies of the Veda, Purāṇas and so in the city also ceased; timireṇa = by darkness; abhiliptā = to be covered over; iva = appeared; sā = the; tadā = at that time; nagarī babhau1 = city.
The sacrificial fire was not lit in the city. Studies of the Veda, Purāṇas and so on in the city also ceased. The city appeared to be covered over by darkness at that time.
