Chapter 48: The Ladies in Ayodhyā Lament
Text 2.48.35
उपशान्तवणिक्पण्या नष्टहर्षा निराश्रया।
अयोध्या नगरी चासीन्नष्टतारमिवाम्बरम्॥
upaśānta-vaṇik-paṇyā naṣṭa-harṣā nirāśrayā
ayodhyā nagarī cāsīn naṣṭa-tāram ivāmbaram
upaśānta-vaṇik-paṇyā = the merchants’ trading in the city ceased; naṣṭa-harṣā = the city’s happiness had been destroyed; nirāśrayā = unsheltered [now]; ayodhyā = of Ayodhyā; nagarī ca = the city; āsīt = was; naṣṭa-tāram = without the stars; iva = it was like; ambaram = the sky.
The merchants’ trading in the city ceased. The city’s happiness had been destroyed. The city of Ayodhyā was unsheltered [now]. It was like the sky without the stars.
