Chapter 49: Rāma Continues on Towards the Forest
Text 2.49.10
ततो वेदश्रुतिं नाम शिववारिवहां नदीम्।
उत्तीर्याभिमुखः प्रायादगस्त्याध्युषितां दिशम्॥
tato vedaśrutiṁ nāma śiva-vārivahāṁ nadīm
uttīryābhimukhaḥ prāyād agastyādhyuṣitāṁ diśam
tataḥ = then; vedaśrutim = Vedaśruti; nāma = named; śiva-vārivahām = that flowed with auspicious waters; nadīm = the river; uttīrya = He crossed and; abhimukhaḥ = went; prāyāt = toward; agastya-adhyuṣitām = occupied by Agastya; diśam = the direction.
He then crossed the river named Vedaśruti that flowed with auspicious waters and went toward the direction occupied by Agastya.
“The direction occupied by Agastya” means “the south.”
