Chapter 50: The Meeting of Rāma and Guha
Text 2.50.5
अनुक्रोशो दया चैव यथार्हं मयि वः कृतः।
चिरं दुःखस्य पापीयो गम्यतामर्थसिद्धये॥
anukrośo dayā caiva yathārhaṁ mayi vaḥ kṛtaḥ
ciraṁ duḥkhasya pāpīyo gamyatām artha-siddhaye
anukrośaḥ = respectful to; dayā = compassionate; ca eva = and; yathā-arham = as was appropriate; mayi = upon Me; vaḥ = you; kṛtaḥ = have been; ciram = for a long period of time; duḥkhasya = to be distressed; pāpīyaḥ = is not good; gamyatām = please go; artha-siddhaye = [back] to your work.
You have been respectful to and compassionate upon Me as was appropriate. To be distressed for a long period of time is not good. Please go [back] to your work.
Lord Rāma considered that the people of the country had been respectful to and compassionate upon Him as was appropriate, that is, because He was their master and so on. “To be distressed for a long period of time is not good” implies “By seeing Me you will become more distressed.” Therefore, He wanted them to get [back] to their work at home and so on.
