शिंशुमारैश्च नक्रैश्च भुजङ्गैश्च निषेविताम्।
विष्णुपादच्युतां दिव्यामपापां पापनाशिनीम्॥
śiṁśumāraiś ca nakraiś ca bhujaṅgaiś ca niṣevitām
viṣṇu-pāda-cyutāṁ divyām apāpāṁ pāpa-nāśinīm
śiṁśumāraiḥ ca = by porpoises 2; nakraiḥ ca = crocodiles; bhujaṅgaiḥ = snakes; ca = and; niṣevitām = she was occupied; viṣṇu-pāda-cyutām = she had emanated from the lotus feet of Lord Viṣṇu; divyām = the divine Gaṅgā; apāpām = was sinless; pāpa-nāśinīm = and destroyed the sins [of those who took shelter of her].
She was occupied by porpoises, crocodiles and snakes. She had emanated from the lotus feet of Lord Viṣṇu. The divine Gaṅgā was sinless and destroyed the sins [of those who took shelter of her].
1 Gaṅgā had merely appeared in the Himālayas. She did not emanate from the Himalayas. She emanated from Lord Viṣṇu’s lotus feet as explicitly mentioned here.
Because it is stated here that Gaṅgā had emanated from the lotus feet of Lord Viṣṇu, the statement in Bāla-kāṇḍa (Canto 1) that she had come from the Himalayas should be understood to mean that she had merely appeared there.1
