Chapter 51: Guha and Lakṣmaṇa Converse at Night
Text 2.51.11
यो मन्त्रतपसा लब्धो विविधैश्च परिश्रमैः।
एको दशरथस्येष्टः पुत्रः सदृशलक्षणः॥
yo mantra-tapasā labdho vividhaiś ca pariśramaiḥ
eko daśarathasyeṣṭaḥ putraḥ sadṛśa-lakṣaṇaḥ
yaḥ = He; mantra-tapasā = by the power of mantras and austerity; labdhaḥ = was obtained; vividhaiḥ = of several kinds; ca = and; pariśramaiḥ = hard labor; ekaḥ = He is the chief 1; daśarathasya = of Daśaratha; iṣṭaḥ = and cherished; putraḥ = son; sadṛśa-lakṣaṇaḥ = with [bodily] characteristics similar to His father.
“He was obtained by the power of mantras and austerity and through hard labor of several kinds. He is the chief and cherished son of Daśaratha, with [bodily] characteristics similar to His father.
The “hard labor of several kinds” means “performance of sacrifices and so on.”
