Chapter 51: Guha and Lakṣmaṇa Converse at Night
Text 2.51.19
अतिक्रान्तमतिक्रान्तमनवाप्य मनोरथम्।
रामे राज्यमनिक्षिप्य पिता मे विनशिष्यति॥
atikrāntam atikrāntam anavāpya mano-ratham
rāme rājyam anikṣipya pitā me vinaśiṣyati
atikrāntam atikrāntam = his ever-increasing; anavāpya = not having attained; manaḥ-ratham = ambitions; rāme = with Rāma; rājyam = the kingdom; anikṣipya = and not depositing; pitā = father; me = My; vinaśiṣyati = will perish.
“Not having attained his ever-increasing ambitions and not depositing the kingdom with Rāma, My father will perish.
King Daśaratha’s ever-increasing ambitions were that Rāma who was born to him would grow, get married and then attain his kingdom. The king could not attain his ambitions because he didn’t deposit the kingdom with Rāmacandra.
GLOSS. [The glossator reads rājye rāmam instead of rāme rājyam which yields the following meaning.] King Daśaratha would lament, “[Everything] is lost, [everything] is lost!” King Daśaratha would die without placing Rāma on the throne after His return.
