Chapter 51: Guha and Lakṣmaṇa Converse at Night
Text 2.51.20
सिद्धार्थाः पितरं वृत्तं तस्मिन्कालेऽप्युपस्थिते।
प्रेतकार्येषु सर्वेषु संस्करिष्यन्ति भूमिपम्॥
siddhārthāḥ pitaraṁ vṛttaṁ tasmin kāle ’py upasthite
preta-kāryeṣu sarveṣu saṁskariṣyanti bhūmipam
siddha-arthāḥ = [only] those whose purposes have been fulfilled; pitaram = for My father; vṛttam = dead 2; tasmin = when that; kāle = time; api = even; upasthite = arrives; preta-kāryeṣu = the funeral rites; sarveṣu = all; saṁskariṣyanti = will conduct; bhūmipam = King Daśaratha.
“Even when that time arrives, [only] those whose purposes have been fulfilled will conduct all the funeral rites for My dead father King Daśaratha.
Lakṣmaṇa implies that the purposes of Himself, Rāma and so on have not been fulfilled.
