बर्हिणानां च निर्घोषः श्रूयते नदतां वने।
तराम जाह्नवीं सौम्य शीघ्रगां सागरङ्गमाम्।
गच्छामः सन्ध्युपासार्थं त्वरयय्स महारथ॥
barhiṇānāṁ ca nirghoṣaḥ śrūyate nadatāṁ vane
tarāma jāhnavīṁ saumya śīghragāṁ sāgaraṅgamām
gacchāmaḥ sandhy-upāsārthaṁ tvarayasva mahā-ratha
barhiṇānām ca = birds; nirghoṣaḥ = the noise; śrūyate = we can [even] hear; nadatām = of the resounding; vane = in this forest; tarāma = let us cross over; jāhnavīm = Gaṅgā; saumya = gentle Lakṣmaṇa; śīghragām = who swiftly flows; sāgaraṅgamām = to the ocean; gacchāmaḥ = let us go; sandhi-upāsā-artham = for our sandhyā-vandana; tvarayasva = hurry; mahā-ratha = O great chariot-fighter.
We can [even] hear the noise of the resounding birds in this forest. Gentle Lakṣmaṇa, let us cross over Gaṅgā who swiftly flows to the ocean. O great chariot-fighter, let us go for our sandhyā-vandana. Hurry!
Nadatāṁ vane indicates that the forest resounded with a grave sound. The peacocks here were unlike the peacocks in the cities kept for play. Because Gaṅgā flowed swiftly, she could not be crossed without a boat. She was going toward the ocean and therefore she was wide and great.
