विज्ञाय रामस्य वचः सौमित्रिर्मित्रनन्दनः।
गुहमामन्त्र्य सूतं च सोऽतिष्ठद्भातुरग्रतः॥
vijñāya rāmasya vacaḥ saumitrir mitra-nandanaḥ
guham āmantrya sūtaṁ ca so ’tiṣṭhad bhrātur agrataḥ
vijñāya = having understood; rāmasya = Rāma’s; vacaḥ = instruction; saumitriḥ = Sumitrā’s son; mitra-nandanaḥ = who delighted His friends; guham = Guha; āmantrya = called and; sūtam = the charioteer; ca = and; saḥ atiṣṭhat = stood; bhrātuḥ = His brother; agrataḥ = before.
Having understood Rāma’s instruction, Sumitrā’s son who delighted His friends called Guha and the charioteer, and stood before His brother.1
1 Lakṣmaṇa is referred to as mitra-nandanaḥ (“who delighted His friends”) because He distributed the service of transporting Rāmacandra across Gaṅgā to Guha and Sumantra. The boat was arranged by Guha and Sumantra moved the luggage to the boat. Naturally, such services caused delight in the hearts of these pure servitors of Lord Rāma.
Lakṣmaṇa understood that Śrī Rāmacandra wanted that a boat be quickly brought to cross the river. Sumitrā’s son addressed Guha and the charioteer, “Do you understand what Rāma wants?”
