Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.28

नैवाहमनुशोचामि लक्ष्मणो न च मैथिली।
अयोध्यायाश्च्युताश्चेति वने वस्यामहेति च॥

naivāham anuśocāmi lakṣmaṇo na ca maithilī
ayodhyāyāś cyutāś ceti vane vatsyāmaheti ca

na eva = neither; aham = I; anuśocāmi = lament; lakṣmaṇaḥ = Lakṣmaṇa; na ca = nor; maithilī = or Maithilī; ayodhyāyāḥ = of Ayodhyā; cyutāḥ ca = we have been thrown out; iti = that; vane = in the forest; vatsyāmahe = we are living; ca = and; iti = that.

Neither I nor Lakṣmaṇa or Maithilī lament that we have been thrown out of Ayodhyā and that we are living in the forest.1

Rāmacandra feared that the king would be unable to function out of distress in separation from Him. Therefore He spoke these words of consolation.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: vatsyāmahety atra ārṣaḥ sandhiḥ.
