Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.28
नैवाहमनुशोचामि लक्ष्मणो न च मैथिली।
अयोध्यायाश्च्युताश्चेति वने वस्यामहेति च॥
naivāham anuśocāmi lakṣmaṇo na ca maithilī
ayodhyāyāś cyutāś ceti vane vatsyāmaheti ca
na eva = neither; aham = I; anuśocāmi = lament; lakṣmaṇaḥ = Lakṣmaṇa; na ca = nor; maithilī = or Maithilī; ayodhyāyāḥ = of Ayodhyā; cyutāḥ ca = we have been thrown out; iti = that; vane = in the forest; vatsyāmahe = we are living; ca = and; iti = that.
Neither I nor Lakṣmaṇa or Maithilī lament that we have been thrown out of Ayodhyā and that we are living in the forest.1
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: vatsyāmahety atra ārṣaḥ sandhiḥ.
Rāmacandra feared that the king would be unable to function out of distress in separation from Him. Therefore He spoke these words of consolation.
