gataṁ tu gaṅgāpara-pāram āśu
rāmaṁ sumantraḥ pratataṁ nirīkṣya
adhva-prakarṣād vinivṛtta-dṛṣṭir
mumoca bāṣpaṁ vyathitas tapasvī
gatam tu = reach; gaṅgā-apara-pāram = the other bank of Gaṅgā; āśu = quickly; rāmam = Rāma; sumantraḥ = Sumantra; pratatam nirīkṣya = after continuously watching; adhva-prakarṣāt = because of the long distance [between them]; vinivṛtta-dṛṣṭiḥ = became unable to see [Him]; mumoca = he shed; bāṣpam = tears; vyathitaḥ = he was pained at heart; tapasvī = and in a piteous state.
After continuously watching Rāma quickly reach the other bank of Gaṅgā, Sumantra became unable to see [Him] because of the long distance [between them]. He was pained at heart and in a piteous state he shed tears.
In some manuscripts, pratapan appears instead of pratatam indicating that Sumantra was burning in anxiety [over Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā-devī].
