Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.101

स लोकपालप्रतिमप्रभाववांस्तीर्त्वा महात्मा वरदो महानदीम्।
ततः समृद्धाञ्शुभसस्यमालिनः क्रमेण वत्सान्मुदितानुपागमत्॥

sa lokapāla-pratima-prabhāvavāṁs
tīrtvā mahātmā varado mahā-nadīm
tataḥ samṛddhāñ śubha-sasya-mālinaḥ
krameṇa vatsān muditān upāgamat

saḥ = the; lokapāla-pratima-prabhāvavān = whose influence was similar to that of the lokapāla demigods; tīrtvā = crossed; mahā-ātmā = great soul; varadaḥ = and bestower of benedictions; mahā-nadīm = great river; tataḥ = and then; samṛddhān = and prosperous; śubha-sasya-mālinaḥ = that abounded in auspicious crops; krameṇa = gradually; vatsān = Vatsadeśa; muditān = the happy; upāgamat = reached.

The great soul and bestower of benedictions whose influence was similar to that of the lokapāla demigods crossed the great river and then gradually reached the happy and prosperous Vatsadeśa that abounded in auspicious crops.

In some manuscripts, matsyān (“Matsyadeśa”) appears instead of vatsān (“Vatsadeśa”), but that is a scribal error, for the lands were as follows: Vatsadeśa was the land of Prayāga between Gaṅgā and Yamunā. The portion to its west was Pāñcāladeśa. Śūrasenadeśa was on the southern bank of Yamunā. Matsyadeśa was to its west.

The correct reading [for the first line] is sa lokapāla-pratima-prabhāvavāṁs. The other reading breaks the meter.1

1 Another reading of the first line is sa lokapāla-pratima-prabhāvas. But this breaks the meter as observed in the commentary.
