Chapter 54: Rāmacandra Meets Bharadvāja Ṛṣi
Text 2.54.17
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजपुत्रस्य धीमतः।
उपानयत धर्मात्मा गामर्घ्यमुदकं ततः॥
tasya tad vacanaṁ śrutvā rāja-putrasya dhīmataḥ
upānayata dharmātmā gām arghyam udakaṁ tataḥ
tasya = of the; tat = those; vacanam = words; śrutvā = hearing; rāja-putrasya = son of King Daśaratha; dhīmataḥ = intelligent; upānayata = had brought [to worship Rāma]; dharma-ātmā = the sage whose mind was devoted to dharma; gām = a large bull; arghyam = arghya; udakam = and water; tataḥ = then.
Hearing those words of the intelligent son of King Daśaratha, the sage whose mind was devoted to dharma then had a large bull, arghya and water brought [to worship Rāma].
Gām here indicates that a large bull was brought while offering madhuparka in accordance with the Smṛti 1. Offering arghya is a part of worship.
