Chapter 55: Rāma Leaves Bharadvāja’s Āśrama and Crosses the Yamunā
Text 2.55.4
गङ्गायमुनयोः सन्धिमासाद्य मनुजर्षभौ।
कालिन्दीमनुगच्छेतां नदीं पश्चान्मुखाश्रिताम्॥
gaṅgā-yamunayoḥ sandhim āsādya manuja-rṣabhau
kālindīm anugacchetāṁ nadīṁ paścān mukhāśritām
gaṅgā-yamunayoḥ = of Gaṅgā and Yamunā; sandhim = the confluence; āsādya = upon reaching; manuja-ṛṣabhau = O princes; kālindīm = Kālindī; anugacchetām = follow; nadīm = the river; paścāt mukha-āśritām = that has turned towards the west.
O princes, upon reaching the confluence of Gaṅgā and Yamunā, follow the river Kālindī that has turned towards the west.
“Follow the river Kālindī that has turned towards the west” indicates that the Yamunā there slightly turned westwards due to the force of the waters of Gaṅgā. So they should face the west and go.
