Chapter 55: Rāma Leaves Bharadvāja’s Āśrama and Crosses the Yamunā
Text 2.55.5

athāsādya tu kālindīṁ śīghra-srotasam āpagām
tasyās tīrthaṁ pracaritaṁ purāṇaṁ prekṣya rāghavau
tatra yūyaṁ plavaṁ kṛtvā taratāṁśumatīṁ nadīm

atha āsādya tu = having reached; kālindīm = Kālindī; śīghra-srotasam = of swift flow; āpagām = the river; tasyāḥ = its; tīrtham = bank; pracaritam = well-trodden; purāṇam = and ancient; prekṣya = will be able to see; rāghavau = the two descendants of Raghu; tatra = there; yūyam plavam kṛtvā = make a raft; tarata = and cross; āṁśumatīm = Yamunā; nadīm = the river.

Having reached the river Kālindī of swift flow, the two descendants of Raghu will be able to see its well-trodden and ancient bank. Make a raft there and cross the river Yamunā.

Sage Bharadvāja’s description of the river as swift in flow refers to the portion where her waters are not stopped by the obstruction caused by the force of Gaṅgā’s waters. Āṁśumatīm indicates that Yamunā is the daughter of Sūrya.
