Chapter 56: Rāma Reaches Citrakūṭa
Text 2.56.33-34

वैश्वदेवबलिं कृत्वा रौद्रं वैष्णवमेव च।
वास्तुसंशमनीयानि मङ्गलानि प्रवर्तयन्॥

जपं च न्यायतः कृत्वा स्नात्वा नद्यां यथाविधि।
पापसंशमनं रामश्चकार बलिमुत्तमम्॥

vaiśvadeva-baliṁ kṛtvā raudraṁ vaiṣṇavam eva ca
vāstu-saṁśamanīyāni maṅgalāni pravartayan

japaṁ ca nyāyataḥ kṛtvā snātvā nadyāṁ yathā-vidhi
pāpa-saṁśamanaṁ rāmaś cakāra balim uttamam

vaiśvadeva-balim = the Vaiśvadeva sacrifice, the bali-haraṇa ritual to offer the sacrificial meat to the deities; kṛtvā = He performed; raudram = the sacrifice for Lord Rudra; vaiṣṇavam eva = the sacrifice for Lord Viṣṇu; ca = and; vāstu-saṁśamanīyāni = to remove inauspiciousness in the residence; maṅgalāni = in other auspicious activities; pravartayan = engaged; japam ca = uttered Vedic mantras; nyāyataḥ = as appropriate; kṛtvā snātvā = took bath again; nadyām = in the river; yathā-vidhi = according to the scriptural injunction; pāpa-saṁśamanam = warded off sinful creatures; rāmaḥ = then Rāma; cakāra = and made; balim uttamam = excellent offerings to all creatures.

He performed the Vaiśvadeva sacrifice, the bali-haraṇa ritual to offer the sacrificial meat to the deities, the sacrifice for Lord Rudra and the sacrifice for Lord Viṣṇu. Then Rāma engaged in other auspicious activities to remove inauspiciousness in the residence, uttered Vedic mantras as appropriate, took bath again in the river according to the scriptural injunction, warded off sinful creatures and made excellent offerings to all creatures.1

“Rāma engaged in other auspicious activities to remove inauspiciousness in the residence” indicates that He performed activities such as the Puṇyāha-vācana and recitation of the Śānti mantras.

[Authorities] state that Rāma took bath once again because the Smṛti states—tataḥ sarvauṣadhī-snānaṁ yajamānasya kārayet: “One should make the sponsor [of the sacrifice] take bath with water that has touched all medicinal herbs.”

“He warded off sinful creatures” refers to Lord Rāma’s warding off the cruel ghostly beings—those that roam in the day and those that roam in the night.
