Chapter 57: Sumantra Returns to Ayodhyā
Text 2.57.24

स प्रविश्याष्टमीं कक्ष्यां राजानं दीनमातुरम्।
पुत्रशोकपरिद्यूनमपश्यत्पाण्डुरे गृहे॥

sa praviśyāṣṭamīṁ kakṣyāṁ rājānaṁ dīnam āturam
putra-śoka-paridyūnam apaśyat pāṇḍure gṛhe

saḥ = he; praviśya = after entering; aṣṭamīm = the eighth; kakṣyām = gateway; rājānam = the king; dīnam = miserable; āturam = anguished; putra-śoka-paridyūnam = and emaciated in distress about his son; apaśyat = saw; pāṇḍure = in his pale; gṛhe = house.

After entering the eighth gateway, he saw the king miserable, anguished and emaciated in distress about his son in his pale house.

Pāṇḍure (“pale”) indicates that there was no royal prosperity [in the house].
