अथ सूतो महाराजं कृताञ्जलिरुपस्थितः।
राममेवानुशोचन्तं दुःखशोकसमन्वितम्॥
वृद्धं परमसंतप्तं नवग्रहमिव द्विपम्।
विनिश्वसन्तं ध्यायन्तमस्वस्थमिव कुञ्जरम्॥
atha sūto mahā-rājaṁ kṛtāñjalir upasthitaḥ
rāmam evānuśocantaṁ duḥkha-śoka-samanvitam
vṛddhaṁ parama-santaptaṁ nava-graham iva dvipam
viniśvasantaṁ dhyāyantam asvastham iva kuñjaram
atha = then; sūtaḥ = the sūta; mahā-rājam = the Mahārāja; kṛta-añjaliḥ = joined his palms in supplications; upasthitaḥ = and came before; rāmam eva = about Rāma; anuśocantam = simply lamenting; duḥkha-śoka-samanvitam = with distress and anguish; vṛddham = the old king was; parama-santaptam = he was extremely tormented; nava-graham = that had just been caught; iva = like; dvipam = an elephant; viniśvasantam = he was sighing; dhyāyantam = and lost in thought; asvastham = a diseased; iva = like; kuñjaram = elephant.
The sūta then joined his palms in supplication and came before the Mahārāja. The old king was simply lamenting about Rāma. He was extremely tormented with distress and anguish, like an elephant that had just been caught. He was sighing and lost in thought, like a diseased elephant.
