Chapter 58: Sumantra Conveys the Message of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.58.4
राजा तु रजसा धृतं ध्वस्ताङ्गं समुपस्थितम्।
अश्रुपूर्णमुखं दीनमुवाच परमार्तवत्॥
rājā tu rajasā dhūtaṁ dhvastāṅgaṁ samupasthitam
aśru-pūrṇa-mukhaṁ dīnam uvāca paramārtavat
rājā tu = the king then; rajasā dhūtam = his body was covered with dust; dhvasta-aṅgam = Sumantra was trembling; samupasthitam = to Sumantra who had come before him; aśru-pūrṇa-mukham = his face was filled with tears from his eyes; dīnam = and he appeared wretched; uvāca = spoke; parama-ārtavat = as if in extreme sorrow.
The king then spoke to Sumantra who had come before him. Sumantra was trembling. His body was covered with dust. His face was filled with tears from his eyes and he appeared wretched as if in extreme sorrow.
GLOSS. [Uvāca] paramārtavat indicates that he [appeared wretched and] spoke words of extreme sorrow.
