Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 58: Sumantra Conveys the Message of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.58.24

अब्रवीच्चापि मां भूयो भृशमश्रूणि वर्तयन्।
मातेव मम माता ते द्रष्टव्या पुत्रगर्धिनी॥

abravīc cāpi māṁ bhūyo bhṛśam aśrūṇi vartayan
māteva mama mātā te draṣṭavyā putra-gardhinī

abravīt ca = He told; api = also; mām = me; bhūyaḥ = again [that I should convey the following to Bharata]; bhṛśam = a lot of; aśrūṇi = tears; vartayan = shedding; mātā = mother; iva = to be like; mama = My; mātā = mother; te = Your; draṣṭavyā = You should consider; putra-gardhinī = who longs for her son.

Shedding a lot of tears, He also told me again [that I should convey the following to Bharata]: “You should consider My mother who longs for her son to be like Your mother.”

Lord Rāma considered the pains that His mother might experience [under Bharata] and the fact that He could not serve her. So He shed tears.
