इत्येवं मां महाराज ब्रुवन्नेव महायशाः।
रामो राजीवताम्राक्षो भृशमश्रूण्यवर्तयत्॥
ity evaṁ māṁ mahā-rāja bruvann eva mahā-yaśāḥ
rāmo rājīva-tāmrākṣo bhṛśam aśrūṇy avartayat
iti evam = thus; mām = to me; mahā-rāja = Mahārāja; bruvan eva = while speaking; mahā-yaśāḥ = that greatly famous; rāmaḥ = Rāma; rājīva-tāmra-akṣaḥ = whose lotus eyes were copper-red; bhṛśam = a lot of; aśrūṇi = tears; avartayat = shed.
Mahārāja, while speaking to me thus, that greatly famous Rāma whose lotus eyes were copper-red, shed a lot of tears.
1 Rāma had many things in His mind which He only revealed at a later point in time and that too under the force of circumstances. Rāma was reserved now because it was inappropriate to reveal His thoughts earlier by etiquette. This is a lesson for us.
His eyes were red due to sorrow. He shed a lot of tears [again] because it was inappropriate for Him to speak out what He had in His mind, which He would later reveal [in anger] after Sītā-devī is kidnapped.1 Supta-pramatta-kupitānāṁ vacanair
bhāva-jñānaṁ draṣṭavyam: “One can understand the intent of persons from words spoken by them when they are asleep, intoxicated or enraged.”
