Chapter 59: Sumantra Describes the Agony of all Creatures in the Country
Text 2.59.16
हर्म्यैर्विमानैः प्रासादैरवेक्ष्य रथमागतम्।
हाहाकारकृता नार्यो रामादर्शनकर्शिताः॥
harmyair vimānaiḥ prāsādair avekṣya ratham āgatam
hā-hā-kāra-kṛtā nāryo rāmādarśana-karśitāḥ
harmyaiḥ = in mansions; vimānaiḥ = seven-storied homes; prāsādaiḥ = and palaces; avekṣya = noticed that; ratham = the [royal] chariot; āgatam = had arrived [without Rāma]; hā-hā-kāra-kṛtāḥ = and loudly cried out, “alas, alas!”; nāryaḥ = women; rāma-adarśana-karśitāḥ = emaciated by not seeing Rāma.
Women in mansions, seven-storied homes and palaces, emaciated by not seeing Rāma, noticed that the [royal] chariot had arrived [without Rāma] and loudly cried out, “Alas, alas!”
