पथि पृच्छति वैदेही ग्रामांश्च नगराणि च।
गतिं दृष्ट्वा नदीनां च पादपान्विविधानपि॥
रामं वा लक्ष्मणं वापि पृष्ट्वा जानाति जानकी।
अयोध्याक्रोशरमात्रे तु विहारमिव संश्रिता॥
pathi pṛcchati vaidehī grāmāṁś ca nagarāṇi ca
gatiṁ dṛṣṭvā nadīnāṁ ca pādapān vividhān api
rāmaṁ vā lakṣmaṇaṁ vāpi pṛṣṭvā jānāti jānakī
ayodhyā-krośa-mātre tu vihāram iva saṁśritā
pathi = on the way; pṛcchati = asked; vaidehī = Vaidehī; grāmān ca = the villages; nagarāṇi ca = cities; gatim = the movement; dṛṣṭvā = upon noticing; nadīnām = of the rivers; ca = and; pādapān = of trees; vividhān api = the variety; rāmam = Rāma; vā = or; lakṣmaṇam vā api = Lakṣmaṇa [about them]; pṛṣṭvā = after asking about them [and hearing Their answers]; jānāti = learnt about them; jānakī = Jānakī; ayodhyā-krośa-mātre tu = within one krośa from Ayodhyā; vihāram = it was a garden; iva = as if; saṁśritā = she has settled in.
Upon noticing the villages, cities, the movement of the rivers and the variety of trees on the way, Vaidehī asked Rāma or Lakṣmaṇa [about them]. After asking about them [and hearing Their answers], Jānakī learnt about them. She has settled in as if it was a garden within one krośa from Ayodhyā.
