Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 60: Kausalyā Continues to Lament
Text 2.60.19

नूपुरोद्घुष्टहेलेव खेलं गच्छति भामिनी।
इदानीमपि वैदेही तद्रागान्न्यस्तभूषणा॥

nūpurodghuṣṭa-heleva khelaṁ gacchati bhāminī
idānīm api vaidehī tad-rāgān nyasta-bhūṣaṇā

nūpura-udghuṣṭa-helā = in imitation of the sound of her anklets; iva = as if; khelam = sportingly; gacchati = walks; bhāminī = beautiful; idānīm api = even now; vaidehī = Vaidehī; tat-rāgāt = because she likes ornamentation; nyasta-bhūṣaṇā = she has placed ornaments on her body.

Because she likes ornamentation, she has placed ornaments on her body. Even now beautiful Vaidehī walks sportingly as if in imitation of the sound of her anklets.

That Sītā-devī wore ornaments all the time is understood from a later statement of Bharata:

manye sābharaṇā suptā sītāsmiñ śayanottame

“I think that Sītā-devī slept on this excellent bed with her ornaments on.” (Rāmāyaṇa 2.88.14)
